A wonderful gem related to early American missions in India, including Adoniram Judson, George Dana Boardman, etc. and the Calcutta work of the British mission connected to William Carey, etc,.

The volume itself is rare. No other copies on the market at the time of cataloguing and we trace not a single example at auction. Eliza Leslie [1805-1826] was an early Baptist missionary to India. Her husband, Andrew Leslie [1798-1870] was a printer by trade who traveled to India as a missionary to assist with the publication of tracts and Bibles at the Calcutta mission.

As an aside, Andrew Leslie's published work on the enjoyment of the Heavenly World through prayer contains multiple references to the personal communion of William Carey with Christ, and is a wonderful little work, but equally unobtainable.

The memoir present here was first published in England [1828] and then in America in 1830. The present copy bears the early paper label of the Boardman Missionary Society at Waterville College. This is likely the original label from its formation in 1832 after the untimely death of Baptist missionary and friend of Adoniram Judson, George Dana Boardman. Judson married Boardman's widow, Sarah.

A fine example of a scarce title with wonderful provenance.

Leslie, Andrew. Memoir of Mrs. Eliza Leslie, Late Missionary at Monghyr. With Extracts from her Letters and Journals. To which is added, a Sketch of Mrs. Leslie's Brother. Boston. Lames Loring's Sabbath School Bookstore. 1830. 104pp.

Very good in quarter calf with printed paper boards. Very diminutive label at base of spine. Boardman Missionary Society. Waterville College [printed] label with handwritten No. 144 in a period hand. Likely the 144th volume in their collection. That would put it probably at the 1832 origination date.

Frontis is a three-panel fold out entitled, "Heathen School in India." 19th century red oval stamp from Waterville College Library on title, rather attractive. Else completely clean and solid aside from some rather minor foxing. An exemplary copy of a scarce work.
