Very important Great Awakening era hymn-book of the Moravians in England, edited by John Gambold [1711-1771], and containing 11 new translations by Gambold and 28 original hymns.

Gambold had been friends with Charles and John Wesley. His mystic rather than evangelistic tone and make-up ultimately led him to john with the Moravians instead He found his people, corresponded frequently with Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf and ultimately became, for all intents and purposes, England's Nicholas von Zinzendorf.

The hymnal is a fascinating combination of historic hymns, focusing on those suited to the highly Christological and experiential theology of the Moravians, with more recent hymns by Gambold and others of the Great Awakening. We have handled just one other example in the past 25 years.

Additionally, it contains an important introduction articulating the Moravian theology of musical worship, hymnody, etc.,

Gambold, John. A Collection of Hymns of the Children of God in all Ages, from the Beginning till now. In Two Parts, Designed Chiefly for the Use of the Congregations in Union with the Brethren [Moravian] Church. London. Printed; and to be had at all the Brethren's Chapels. 1754. 380 + 390 + Tables.

Textually exceptionally crisp and clean, original calf with perhaps a replacement title label, a few points consolidated on the spine and a tear below the label. Hinges to cords on front, a few scattered ex library stamps, else very solid and the whole very clean.
