Very rare translation into Cherokee by important missionary and promoter of Native American rights, Rev. Amory Nelson Chamberlin [1821-1894]. Born on the Brainerd Mission in Tennessee to a missionary family, his entire life was lived with the Cherokee, he spoke the language flawlessly from his youth, and he and his family were ultimately given Cherokee names. When his tribe was driven to the "Indian Territory" [now Oklahoma], his family chose to be displaced with them rather than live on land stolen from the people they loved.

The present work was printed in Vinita and was one of the earliest works ever printed in the new "Indian Territory. The Indian Record for 1886 notes that a printing press was being gifted, along with a specially made set of Cherokee type, to the new "Indian Presbytery" at Vinita. The press was to be operated under the auspices of A. N. Chamberlin for the benefit of the Indian Christians.

Chamberlin, A. N. [Comp. & Trans.] The Shorter Catechism. With Proof Texts. Compiled, And Translated by Rev. A. N. Chamberlin. Chieftain Print, Vinita, Indian Territory. 1892. 44pp.

Near very good, loose and never bound original sheets, complete. A few handled and toned, but complete. Unsurprisingly a rare survivor.
