To our knowledge, the first self-contained published work by Henry Ward Beecher, son of Lyman Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, one of the leaders of the 1857 prayer revival, and perhaps the most influential mid-19th century preacher in the revivalist tradition, bridging Charles G. Finney and D. L. Moody chronologically and in terms of content.
The addresses designed for men deal with temperance, gambling, and a sermon which feels a bit "women's bodies are bad" by today's reading, but his meaning is clear enough. Liquor, Gambling, and Loose Women . . . the unholy trinity of youthful male desire according to Beecher.
