A superb copy of a scarce work calling for reform of the criminal and orphanage system in England as it tended to sustain a near-slave work force for large corporations, produce more criminals, and lead to lives of ill-repute [i.e. prostitution and sex-trafficking for the young ladies].

The work was written by Benjamin Waugh, a member of the School Board of London and a Christian advocate for the marginalized. The cause was supported by Lord Shaftesbury, George Muller, and many others and was a part of the broader Evangelical movement for the abolition of slavery, etc.,

Waugh, Benjamin. The Gaol Cradle. Who Rocks It? London. Strahan and Co. 1873. First Edition. 226pp.

Very handsome half leather binding with faux pebbled morocco boards and matching marbled endpapers and foredges. Binding signed and executed by Hodgson Bindery of Liverpool. Also includes the bookplate of Stanley Family / Earl of Derby. They possessed one of the finest collections of books in England in the 19th century. A fine volume from their library is currently on market at $550,000.00.

Some minor rubbing, but crisp, clean, and solid. A very finely preserved volume.
