A fascinating work on the run up to the Civil War in which statistics are utilized to illustrate the profound danger of immigration to the United States, especially "Free Colored" people, the Irish [who are classed on the whole as either atheists or heretics, and drunkards, rapists, and brawlers], Extensive Discussion of Slaves and Slavery, etc.,

The "protectionist" strain is evident from the beginning to the end of its sprawling 367pp. We have chapters and sections like, "Cultivation of American Feeling and Sentiment," "Policy of Americans for America," The American Policy of Non-Intervention," "Crime," "Intemperance," "Juvenile Vagrancy," "Criminal Immigration," etc.,

Absolutely fascinating. Change a few words, update the data, and it feels like it could have been written very recently indeed.

Sanderson, John P. Republican Landmarks. The Views and Opinions of American Statesmen on Foreign Immigration. Being a Collection of Statistics of Population, Pauperism, Crime, etc. With an Inquiry into the True Character of the United States Government, and its Policy on the Subject of Immigration, Naturalization of Aliens, etc. Philadelphia. J. B. Lippincott & Co. 1856. 367pp.

Very solid and usable, though worn, through at points on cloth as shown. Moderately to heavily foxed and stained. Original 1863 ownership signature of Thomas S. Dunbar of Monticello, Missouri. Desirable.
